The first flag of The Salvation Army, designed by Salvation Army co-founder Catherine Booth in 1878, was, initially, crimson with a navy-blue border, which symbolized holiness, and a yellow sun in the middle, which was later replaced by a star, that signified the fiery baptism with the Holy Ghost. The motto written on the star, “Blood & Fire,” stands for the Blood of Christ and the Fire of the Holy Ghost.
