WHAT ARE THE NEW EMERGENCY SERVICES VEHICLES?

The new Emergency Services Vehicles are versatile mobile service units designed to quickly adapt and effectively respond to a wide range of community needs.

The vehicles allow The Salvation Army Greater New York Division to meet the needs of those we serve where they live and provide needed human services where they may be lacking.

WHAT SERVICES DO THE NEW EMERGENCY SERVICES VEHICLES PROVIDE?

The Salvation Army's Emergency Service Vehicles have the capacity to provide a multitude of services, depending on the needs of individual communities. These include:

  • Basic Emergency Needs, such as food, non-food items and hydration distribution (one vehicle can provide food and hydration for some 1,500 people in just one delivery run)
  • Social Service Counseling & Referral Services, connecting to county-wide networks of multi-agency resources
  • Health Services, including basic first aid, health screenings and medical referrals
  • Emotional and Spiritual Care by trained psychological first-aid workers
  • All Hazard Planning, in which we coordinate emergency efforts with our public, private and nonprofit partners

WHEN DO THE NEW EMERGENCY SERVICES VEHICLES OPERATE?

The new Emergency Services Vehicles are ready to respond immediately to disasters, such as terrorist attacks, large-scale blackouts and natural disasters, as well as to meet daily personal emergencies, such as the need for food, clothing, referrals for rental and utility assistance, and financial and spiritual counseling.

WHERE DO THE NEW EMERGENCY SERVICE VEHICLES OPERATE?

There are six new Emergency Service Vehicles. Three are already operational and serving neighborhoods of the Hudson Valley, Long Island and New York City.

HOW ARE THE NEW EMERGENCY SERVICE VEHICLES EQUIPPED?

The vehicles are equipped with the following:

  • Proofing cabinets and Cambro equipment, which can hold massive quantities of food and other necessary items.
  • All-weather tents that can provide a sheltered area of service and protection from the elements.
  • A 3,000-watt generator to furnish electrical power during service deliveries.

This equipment allows for speed and flexibility when responding to a variety of community needs.  The vehicles can function as moveable feeding stations, social-services intake and referral centers, distribution hubs, or mobile health-service units.  The vehicles join an existing divisional fleet of emergency service canteens, and complements our traditional facility-based service model.

WHO DO THE NEW EMERGENCY SERVICES VEHICLES SERVE?
The Salvation Army serves all those in need without discrimination.  Among the populations who may be served through our new Emergency Service Vehicles are the homeless; school children in at-risk communities; the unemployed or underemployed struggling to afford basic necessities; and those impacted by major disasters.
